Preparing for Your Kindergartener’s Graduation
Thursday, May 5th, 2011Graduation ceremonies used to just be for older students, but in recent years, this tradition has extended even to preschools.
The Importance of Graduation
To a kindergartener, the high ideals and lofty concepts of graduation are lost amidst the excitement and fun of graduation day, and the weeks leading up to it. There’s no point trying to get kids to fully understand the significance of what’s going on during the ceremony.
Still, the experience can be very meaningful for your kindergartener, with a little help and guidance on your part.
A Time for Recognition
Your child’s first graduation should be a time for him or her to be recognized for all the things that he or she successfully learned, and all the skills that he or she obtained throughout the preschool years. It’s a time to recognize the discipline and effort it took for a little child to stay seated, to listen to a lesson, to meet new people, and to participate in class activities.
A Time for Congratulations and Encouragement
Not only should kindergarten graduates be recognized for their achievements, but they should also be congratulated and encouraged to take the next step in life, to keep moving forward. Graduation day, and the days leading up to it are a time when parents and teachers have an unparalleled opportunity to reinforce all the values that they have been trying to instil in the children.
As a parent, you can point out to them how all their hard work eventually paid off, even though it was unpleasant at first. You can show them how much they’ve grown as students and as people throughout their time in the preschool. And then you can point their attention to the next step that awaits them after they’ve put off their graduation robes: big kids’ school.
A Time for Celebration
Obviously there’s more preparation to be done for graduation day than just finding cheap graduation gowns and other essential items. There should also be a celebration to follow the formal ceremonies. You and the other parents can organize a party for all the kids in your child’s class. If you want an even bigger celebration, you can even invite the neighbourhood kids and give your child and his or her classmates a big congratulatory bash. If on, the other hand, you want something a little simpler and more intimate, then another good option would be to simple gather the family for a meal and some leisurely activities so that everyone can join your child in celebration of such a significant transition in his or her life.
Other, More Technical Preparations
Aside form the preparations mentioned above, there are a lot of other things that need to be taken care of, and must be discussed with your child’s teachers. If the school has a preset standard for graduation clothes, then you’ll have to go and find the necessary items (robe, cap, tassel, shoes, etc.).
