The Secret To Beating Tiger Woods At Golf … And, Its Correlation To Success In Business!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The game of Golf, although difficult to master, can nevertheless be narrowed down to three fundamental disciplines: 1) The Power Game [Driving & Iron Play], 2) The Short Game [Finesse / Shots within 100 Yards] and 3) Putting.

Success in golf is largely focused on mastering each skill ‘to the best of one’s ability’ and in so doing, a player’s talent or the lack thereof, becomes evident.

Ask any golfer, even the pros and they’ll tell you which of the three disciplines they are best at and which they find most challenging. By most challenging, they mean the skill in which they are least adept – resulting in the highest percentage of ‘Errors’ on the course.

In the book, Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible, author and golf short-game guru, Dave Pelz, studied the best players on the PGA circuit and compiled some revealing data. In his research, he ignored a player’s swing fundamentals preferring rather to concentrate only on ‘Errors Made’ in each of the three disciplines averaged over thousands of shots and hundreds of games. More to the point, a Player’s Performance Results.

He discovered professional golfers, on average, had an error factor of 7-8% when driving [including irons]. In the short or finesse game their error percentage jumped to a surprising 13-26% and he found top PGA golfers – the best of the best – enjoyed only a 50-50 chance of sinking a six foot putt. He referred to these statistics as a player’s ‘Percentage Error Index’.

That said; who among us would be surprised to find Tiger Woods with the best all round average Percentage Error Index amongst the pros? The fact is, Woods is an enigma. Like Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky, he is a rare blend of above average talent in the disciplines that count which is what separates him [them] from the rest. In Tiger’s case, his ability to consistently achieve High Performance Results may make him the best to have ever played the game.

Despite his unquestioned abilities, though, experts and golf aficionados know he is not the best at any one of the three golfing disciplines. That is to say, recent PGA standings show Darren Clark with a 2.9% error factor as the best driver, Phil Mickelson, master of the short game and Ernie Els the best at putting with a 1.678 average.

Tiger is not the best at any one discipline – currently ranked a surprising 51st in the Putting category. He is still, nevertheless, the best at the game and toughest to beat!

The Power of Three

Hypothetically speaking, imagine for a moment what would happen if the rules of golf were changed, just a little? What if players were allowed to take a ‘Team Approach’ to improve their chances of winning? Simply put, Tiger would play against a team of three. Clark would do all the driving, Mickelson would work the irons and Els would only putt.

The answer is not all that mysterious. With a team approach Tiger Woods would not stand a chance and the stats clearly bear this prediction out. In fact, any combination of three players, one from each discipline [listed in the PGA's Top Ten] would overcome Wood’s formidable talents. In the end, the only mitigating factor would be LUCK – a rather ironic twist for those who have ever played against the Tiger.

Although the game of golf is and will always remain an individual sport, the point not to be lost here is if experts were indeed allowed to compete as a team, three against one, using only their dominant strengths, they would automatically improve their win-potential becoming an indominitable force fueled by an unbeatable Percentage Error Index. To put more succinctly; regardless of factors like reputation, flair or swing-fundamentals, they would achieve Better-Performance-Results and Better Performance Results are EVERYTHING!

Winning golf strategies and business? Where’s the correlation?

Few will argue the entire business landscape has been on a slippery slope for the last three decades. Suffice it to say, much has changed and many mistakes were made at all levels in all industries. Little more needs to be said except to ask, “What have we learned?”

Over the years I have waxed a great deal in articles I’ve written about changes in how companies market and sell, the people they got to do it and how fundamentals as uncomplicated as that have been anything but static.

Another look in the rearview mirror shows the 1980s ushered in the computer to mainstream business along with the new ‘Technological Era’. Traditional salespeople suddenly became redundant due to their lack of computer and techno skills. That was their flaw despite the fact they knew how to sell.

Industries tried to compensate by quickly adopting a new ‘Sellers Model’ the Technical Sales-Specialist more affectionately known as the Techie. For a time this strategy seemed to satisfy the need to have frontline sellers who were knowledgeable [comfortable] with the ever-changing complexities of new products and solutions in what was fast becoming an ever-converging marketplace. That was, however, until the end of the 80s when a major flaw was discovered in the Techno Sellers – They couldn’t SELL!

Looking for answers to why profitability was dwindling and customer loyalty was a thing of the past, companies were shocked to find they had frontlines of ‘Tellers’ not ‘Sellers’. Those in the trenches were blessed with knowledge and abilities in the technological genre but were sadly lacking in the discipline of Selling because it clearly contradicted their psychological comfort and expertise – Technology.

Lacking the skills to frame a professional sale, customers were left morally unencumbered and free to shop presented solutions to other Tellers for a better price. Sadly, too many companies learned this lesson the hard way and didn’t survive.

In the 1990s, industries got to work rectifying the Sellers Model conundrum surmising Techno Sellers needed to change if they were to be successful. Generic Sales Training would surely remedy the problem, wouldn’t it? And what about the natural sellers? Couldn’t they be taught to be Technical Specialists too?

Well, anything is possible, especially in theory but often in practice, unlikely. In the absence of a better plan and few options companies spent most of the late 1990s investing considerable time and effort trying to change the spots on those who were asked to do a lot more with less money, time and resources.

There is no better example than the high-tech industries where, for a while, convergence issues meant network solutionists and telephony providers had trouble even defining their own markets and customers never mind addressing the challenges faced by frontline sellers. These tumultuous times spawned a great deal of unrest, dissatisfaction, high turnover and many corporate casualties.

You may now be asking, what if anything has this to do with Tiger Woods or the Percentage Error Index?

Unlike the game of golf which is not going to change, business marketing and sales strategies can, should and will.

Team-Strategy Selling

In order to find credibility in the changes needed for today’s corporate sales strategies, we must first subscribe to Dave Pelz’s ‘Percentage Error Index’ golfing example discussed earlier in this article. Simply said; Tiger Woods, arguably the best player to ever swing a club, would prove no competition should he be challenged by any combination of three PGA top ten players from the three disciplines [Driving, Chipping and Putting]. The stats are irrefutable.

What we glean from this, is, a combination of competitors doing ‘Only’ what they are ‘Best’ at and nothing more, improve the Percentage Error Index to a level as to make the odds of winning, out of reach for an individual opponent – even the undisputed best.

Would the same ‘Team Approach’ stratagem, then, derive similar results for corporate sales? The Percentage Error Index factor, would it prevail? In a word, Yes.

Top sellers, like golfers, are a blend of strengths and weaknesses that in the end ultimately determine how well they perform in each of their respective disciplines. Like Tiger Woods, the culmination of their innate talents is the stuff that keeps them ahead of the pack. Like Tiger woods, their odds of success, predictably diminish should they compete against a team of vertical experts.

“You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear” or “You can’t change the spots on a leopard” – pick any analogy you want. The lesson to remember going forward in 2003 is we have to stop trying to change the dispositions or comfort levels of those we look to, to champion future corporate expectations. That’s not to say employees can’t change or improve but it should underscore the fact that a ‘Team Strategy’ designed to keep players in a comfort zone [intrinsic to them] utilizing only their natural expertise, is the formula that minimizes errors and mathematically enhances sales success.

Let frontline salesreps hunt and gather – create the opportunities for potential sales – that’s what they’re good at. Don’t bog them down with paperwork. Let them be the team quarterback, the coach, if you will. Give them the autonomy to coordinate an approach utilizing a talent-pool of specialists whose vertical talents blend to provide uncompromising Trust and Rapport with customers by removing any Risk -thereby endorsing a positive atmosphere in which to do business.

They should be allowed to work as a team, be accountable as a team and most importantly, be rewarded as a team. That is not to imply remuneration should be equal. A hospital operating room works as a team but with compensations appropriate to each station.

Players should be clear on their responsibilities and the expertise they bring to embolden the team. There should be no doubt as to individual Performance-Results-Expectations. The ‘Team Strategy’ should be honed and practiced much like an actor rehearses for a part. Make no mistake; each team player is an actor confidently playing a convincing role in his or her discipline focused expressly on: a) meeting the needs of the customer, b) neutralizing the competition for their own success, and c) the success of the team and company.

The Bottom Line:

Whether in sports or business, Performance Results, continue to be the quintessential challenge, and, the defining factor for success. A Team Approach utilizing only the vertical strengths of each individual is the winning formula that clearly ensures victory in the competitive corporate marketplace or on the links – even when confronted by masters like Tiger Woods.

Junior Golf Is Becoming More Competitive…Why?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

How do you get the edge when you’re playing junior golf? To keep up with the top junior golfer’s means getting stronger both physically and mentally; and almost perfecting your golf swing. That’s how competitive it’s become.

There are big bucks at stake. Full scholarships are now worth up to a hundred thousand dollars, and for some of these to junior golfers, becoming a professional golfer can mean millions…

We have started to see a dramatic change in the caliber of junior golfers. They are getting fitter, stronger and are hitting it as long as the PGA and LPGA players. This is a combination of personal coaching on swing mechanics and getting stronger.

Junior golfers like Ty Tryon, Michelle Wie and the Song sisters are a perfect example of what junior golfers are capable of, given the right approach. Parents are now realizing the investment in their kid’s golf pays off big when they receive partial or full scholarships for college.
The difference between junior golfers and adults is typically strength – not flexibility. I’ve worked with hundreds of junior golfers and within a very short period of time, doing strength training, their drives increased as much as 50 yards.

Participating in a strength training program doing the wrong exercises can hurt junior golfers not help them. The exercises have to compliment the golf swing from a dynamic standpoint and a stability standpoint. If this is not taken into consideration, improvement will not happen.

The age to begin a strength training workout for juniors is between 12-13 on up. Having a professional oversee the program at the earlier ages is crucial. The upside is a rapidly improving game and who knows…a scholarship for college.

Too many parents and juniors are going it alone and aren’t seeing the results they hoped for. This can be a long and frustrating road to take. Why not save years of searching and hundreds if not thousands of dollars, by doing a little research? Do some talking around your town to see if anyone knows of a fitness trainer who understands golf.

They are a rare breed, but if you look hard enough you can find someone somewhat qualified. Even talk to some of the teaching pros. They might know of some golf trainers who are acceptable. If not, hit the book store. There are several golf fitness books out there, but be on the “lookout”.

From what I’ve seen, most of them are NOT golf fitness books, but only “general” fitness books in disguise. If you see any pictures of a golfer sitting in or on a machine, don’t by the book. That is a telltale sign of a general fitness book. Remember, golf is played on your feet, not sitting down.

So get the edge, by getting stronger for golf! Who knows…you may be the next Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam.

Steve Merril’s NBA Fullcourt Report (Thursday, Feb 23)

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

A big name was traded on Wednesday when the Orlando Magic sent guard Steve Francis to the New York Knicks for Anfernee Hardaway and Trevor Ariza. It was one of many high profile trades over the past month in the NBA. Perhaps the biggest trade of the season occurred in late January when the Indiana Pacers sent Ron Artest to Sacramento for Peja Stojakovic. This trade has worked wonders for both clubs as the Pacers are on a current 6-1 SU (7-0 ATS) run and the Kings are 7-3 SU (8-1-1 ATS) over their past ten games.

Both Indiana and Sacramento travel tonight to face division rivals in the Pistons and Lakers. Below is a look at each of these national TV games on TNT for Thursday night.

INDIANA at DETROIT (-8 , 178) (TNT)

The Pacers enter this game off an excellent seven game home stand where they went 6-1 SU and a perfect 7-0 ATS with their only loss coming versus the defending World Champion San Antonio Spurs. The current 6-1 SU run follows a 0-6 SU losing streak at the end of January.

Indiana has accomplished their current winning streak without their best player as Jermaine O’Neal remains out with a groin injury. O’Neal is expected to miss at least another month and leads the team in scoring (20.9 ppg), rebounding (9.8 rpg), and blocks (2.2 bpg). Indiana has also been without forward Austin Croshere (8.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg) for the past seven games as he is day-to-day with a concussion. Point guard Jamaal Tinsley (10.4 ppg, 4.9 apg) has missed the past eight games due to an elbow injury.

Despite the absence of three regulars, the Pacers continue to win and are coming off an impressive 97-75 home victory over New Orleans as a 6 -point favorite on Tuesday night. The biggest difference has been the acquisition of former Sacramento forward Peja Stojakovic. The Pacers are 6-2 SU (7-0-1 ATS) since he joined the lineup on January 31st. Overall, Stojakovic is second on the team in scoring (18.6 ppg) and rebounding 7.3 rpg) and has helped fill the void created by Jermaine O’Neal’s absence.

The Pistons are 43-9 SU this season and they have an extremely strong home court where they stand 24-2 SU, however the oddsmakers often inflate the pointspread and Detroit is only 13-12-1 ATS in those twenty-six home games. Detroit has the most talented starting lineup in the league with four players making the All-Star team.

Detroit is coming off a 97-87 home win over Atlanta on Tuesday and they are playing with revenge tonight from a 93-85 road loss at Indiana on February 4th. The Pistons were a 7-point road favorite in that game and outshot the Pacers 43-39 percent from the field, but were out rebounded 64-49, including a 25-12 disadvantage on the offensive boards.

SACRAMENTO at L.A. LAKERS (-2, 199) (TNT)

The Sacramento Kings started 0-2 SU/ATS when Ron Artest joined the lineup on January 27th, but the Kings have since gone 7-3 SU (8-1-1 ATS) over their past ten games. Artest is currently second the team in scoring (17.5 ppg), third is assists (3.7 apg), and leads the club in steals (2.8 spg).

Sacramento has become a better defensive squad with Artest and the Kings have held seven of their past nine opponents to 42 percent shooting or lower. Sacramento has also allowed 89 points or less in six of those nine games.

The Kings continue to play without guard/forward Bonzi Wells who has missed the past eight games due to a groin injury. Wells is doubtful tonight and he is tied for the lead in rebounding (7.9 rpg), second on the team in steals (1.8 spg), and fourth on the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and assists (3.1 apg).

Sacramento might also be without forward Kenny Thomas who was injured in Tuesday’s 102-77 home win versus Golden State. Thomas is questionable tonight due to an eye injury and he averages 26 minutes per game this season and is third on the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and seventh in scoring (9.2 ppg). Thomas had been playing increased minutes during Bonzi Well’s absence and Thomas had averaged 11.8 rebounds over the past five games.

The Lakers returned from the All-Star Break with an impressive 99-82 home win over Portland on Tuesday as the Laker’s Lamar Odom’s had one of his best performances of the season with 20 points and 17 rebounds. The Lakers have not won back-to-back games since January 16th and are just 6-9 SU (4-9-2 ATS) during that span.

This is a revenge game for the Lakers who lost 118-109 in overtime at Sacramento on January 19th as a 3-point road favorite. Kobe Bryant had 51 points in that game and was a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Lamar Odom had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Kings were led by Mike Bibby’s 40 points and a triple-double by Kenny Thomas who had 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Wishing on a Sky Lantern

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Make a wish upon a Sky Lantern and it may just come true… If you could have any wish in the world granted, what would it be I wonder? There are the obvious ones of course. Possessing a super power of some sort, like flying or being invisible, is top of a lot of peoples’ lists. Or maybe that’s more a little boy’s fantasy than anything else. Other common wishes you will have heard many times before no doubt are things like; I wish I was rich for life. But then surely you have to wonder, will an endless source of funds bring you happiness? I say no. Then other people would wish for life long happiness. But, if you were perpetually happy how can you appreciate what a wonderful feeling true happiness really is? It would be the norm, so you’d hardly notice it. The reason we humans feel pain at times, ecstasy at others, is so that we can learn to recognise what those feelings are. We learn what our own emotional capacities are and the limits of those. It’s the same with wishing for perfection. It’s like wishing for something that doesn’t really exist. Perfection is ugly anyway. The moral of the story is, when wising on a Wish Lantern, be careful what you wish for!

Only A Hunter Knows

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Oh hunting, some call it a sport and some prefer not to speak of it. Call it what you will, but it has been to many, a tradition that dates back to their fathers, grandfathers, and even before them. Some of our grandparents even depended upon it for their source of food. As time progressed, we have found enjoyment in hunting and continued to do it.

So what makes hunting so enjoyable? Could it be that our ancestors were happy they were providing for their families while hunting and it passed through our bloodline? Or is it that we need some kind of reassurance that we’re still at the top of the food chain no matter what. Whatever it is, only a hunter knows.

Now, weather your hunting birds, big game, or simply pesky coyotes on your farm land, every hunter understands the risk involved and even though takes proper precautions to be extremely safe, accidents happen. This proves to be true in the most recent accident we have seen lately in the news when our Vice President shot his friend, and fellow hunter, while on a quail hunt in Texas. So the truth is out everyone, we all know now! Vice President Cheney is human!

We hold our elected officials on a high level and sometimes act as if they are some sort of robot that can make no mistake and must please everyone. However, they are humans just like you and I, and put their pants on just like we do in the morning. Without a doubt, there is some sort of negligence on a hunter’s part when an accident occurs. But only a hunter knows what its like when your out on the hunt with your buddies, walking a field and a cubby of quail jumps up! You shoot, your fellow hunters shoot and the escaping quail fly away. You quickly run to get your game before they hit the ground and take off running. Some of you go to the right where you shot yours and some to the left. Sometimes there’s that one quail that did not jump with the rest of the cubby. Do you shoot? Where are your friends? The fact of the matter is that it falls in the quick reaction and judgement of the hunter. We take classes, we know the rules, and we know the risk.

Unfortunately, accidents happen a lot more than what we hear about on the news. So why are the masses not throwing up their arms in an outrage over the many other hunting accidents happening? Let’s face it, Vice President Cheney is human, along with our other elected officials. Their going to fall victim to various things such as hunting accidents, encounters with interns, and urges to lie about encounters with interns. We must understand that they are just like you and I and need to treated like that.

Should Vice President Cheney have pulled the trigger that day? I think the answer is most likely no, but until you have been in the situation, and you have made that right decision while on the hunt, only a hunter knows.

Thomas Fite is a fellow hunter and a US Marine. For a great site regarding hunting, go to http://www.greatdeerhunting.com where you can find extensive links, articles and information about hunting products and services.

Peru wants archeology back from Yale

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Rising proudly at over 7500 feet high ( 2300 meters ), Inca citadel of Machu Picchu was so inaccessible that the Spanish conquerors were never able to found it. But in 1911 Yale historian Hiram Bingham rediscovered it, and between 1912 and 1915, directed the National Geographic Society in a series of expeditions that ended in many archaeological finds that were transferred to Yale University, allegedly with the permission of Peruvian president, Augusto Legua.

90 years later, Peruvian authorities wants all those objects back, and had notified the Yale University President that a lawsuit is being prepared in case that an amicable resolution would not be reached.

Although I found this kind of matters very, very complex, I think that the Peruvian claim must be taken in consideration. This would not only be a case of historical justice (in 1911 Peruvians authorities were not conscious of the artistic and historical value of the Inca artefacts) but also an uncommon opportunity to end with an old case of “art without context”.

This kind of claims had been historically futile. From the old one made by the Greek government to the British Museum asking for the Elgin marbles, to the recent demand made by the Nigeria government around stolen Nok objects. But also remember that the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Atlanta has recently returned to Egypt the mummy of Pharaoh Ramesses I, given the “historical importance” of the object. So I will raise one question here: is it more historically important to a country the old, nasty corpse of an ancient King or the artistic artifacts from its most famous heritage city?

Quick Weight Loss Foods

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Quick weight loss foods are nutrient dense, and calorie sparse. Select colorful vegetables like broccoli, all varieties of greens and lettuce, and root vegetables like beets and radishes. Tropical fruits like mango, papaya and kiwi are all excellent choices for quick weight loss foods. These types of food are plentiful in season. Try buying them from your local farmers market or food co-op, and you may be pleasantly surprised by their economy and taste.

Take portability, ease of preparation and convenience into account when shopping for quick weight loss foods. A pre-packaged salad, some baby carrots and dip, and a juicy red apple may be just what you need for a easy, healthy meal. Store a cooler in the back of your vehicle and keep those nutrients cold and fresh! Comfort food like a slice of crisp, sweet watermelon is a summertime shoo-in for a quick weight loss food.

Be nice to yourself and choose foods that you like as the bulk of your quick weight loss foods arsenal. If you don’t like fish, don’t force yourself to eat it! Make your selections from all the food groups and choose those foods that provide the most nutrition for the least caloric count. Dairy foods like low-fat yogurt and ricotta cheese offer a nice mouth feel for a small calorie count.

To summarize, focus on nutrient and calories. Make your selections from all the food groups for quick weight loss foods, but don’t eat something just because it’s low calorie. Eat what you like, like what you eat. Ease of preparation and convenience may outweigh cost in certain situations.

Here Is a Type of Furniture: Series Two

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

A barrister bookcase is a traditional bookcase Its distinguishing feature is a transparent glass front end. This glass front end is hinged at the side allowing someone easy admittance to volumes and other collectibles plainly by lifting the glass door. A barrister bookcase is perfect for many things. A Barrister’s bookcase was frequently used by a lawyers since it was often necessary for them to move. Now, they are also very useful, particularly if one is incessantly moving. This is because of the doors. This entails they can be moved while full.

Oak Furniture
Good barrister bookcases avert the use of the normal sideway opening doors . Instead they use doors with a unique opening mechanism. A metal scissor mechanism when used inside the barrister shelves ensure the moving doors do it in a parallel fashion without getting the doors jammed or skew in the process. One advantage of using the barrister bookcase and shelves is the ability to have several of these units group together. When done well, these bookcases give the effect of an fetching cabinet. They can be made out of a number of materials Whether it is constructed using wood or glass, barristers give a simple elgant appearance to a room.

The bookcases, despite many benifits, often are quite costly. As Luck Would Have It, their many advantages have moved some producers to start creating replica editions and some in modern versions at very small prices. Many variations have simple appearances and can be made to fit a particular theme. They can also be garnished. They can be stacked together allowing them to be easily used to create very interesting unit placements. Some can be used to create end tables, pulpits or even dining areas.
