Webmasters Need to Know This

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Most NEW webmasters don’t have a clue…

What is the purpose of having your Web page? Do you even know what to make it about?

Let’s review the facts:

So you were given free HOSTING (something beetween 5 megs to 100 megs) by your broadband company along with a free domain name registration… or you were surfing the net and you found that there are free hosts that you can use (of course by having them put ads and banners in any good or bad site that you create) and now you don’t know what to use this Web space for.

That happens too often.

Now you are faced with the fact that you have to do something with that and your eyes go like $$.

You start thinking “I am going to make money on the Internet with the next best idea” (usually just by repeating old schemes) and the first thing you “come up with” is something like joining a PAID TO DO SOMETHING site and promoting your AFFILIATE LINK on your page.

You go by telling others how wonderful the program is and blah, blah, blah.
You know what? it doesn’t work… (most of the time)
Then you spend months, don’t see any traffic and you start thinking: “let’s use AUTOROTATORS, AUTOVISITING SITES, MANUAL ROTATORS and so on, and you put a visit COUNTER on your page (you set it up for UNIQUE VISITORS) and start seeing how it counts growing numbers of visits only to realize that, as much as you don’t pay any attention to the pages that your program shows you, most people don’t pay attention to your content as well.

So you think: “how am i gonna get people to visit my site?”

Then someone tells you that the first thing you have to do is SUBMIT your site to the top SEARCH ENGINES. And you do.

And you wait……wait……..wait…….wait…..and wait for the unique visitors to come and they don’t come. Hey, you don’t even know if you are listed or if you are, you are far from the first 100 pages of search results for the KEYWORDS people used. And despair strikes again.

Then you think: “I have to BUY ADVERTISEMENT”

You start spending money for ads that aren’t usually too good at the CLICK THROUGH RATIO (well, you can use Adwords from Google, at least they don’t charge you unless your ads are clicked)
Anyway, you spend money and don’t get any in return.

That is the sad story of more than 95% of webmaster wannabes on the net.

The following title will deal with CONTENT, the MIGHTY KING of the Internet; you have to think of a voice much like Sean Connery’s to read the next phrase: “this is the stuff web pages are made of”

“Been there, done that…”

I know that most of you got discouraged by the last things I said. You think that publishing could be a waste of time and money, that everything has already been said.

Let me tell you, there are a lot of people who have not heard what’s been said, so you can bring old and new INFORMATION and CONTENT to your web page presenting it in a brand new and imaginative way.

You have to have content, the community is starving for content, fresh new or a fresh view.

So, what is content?

Content can be almost anything: Articles, poems, pictures, opinions, jokes, e-books, etc.

Most people don’t know this fact, but Google ™ and most search engines reward pages with new content with a better ranking and punish duplicates (clones, copies, etc.), and better ranking is LIFE on the net (or so they say).

An example of content can be this article that you are reading right now. It’s new, maybe not too fresh, but since English is my second language there probably isn’t any content in the net that resembles mine (at least not in the way it is phrased).

Google ™ and other search engines CAN’T see words inside pictures when they are evaluating content, so they see text only, which means that the more text, the more content and KEYWORDS they see. No wonder pages that only have pictures don’t rank well.

On the other hand, articles, blogs and other text pages rank better.
If you are not into making new content, you can have FREE CONTENT on your web pages. There are sites that offer free articles that you can put on your pages (provided that you don’t modify them or take credit for them). Many people (authors) send their articles to these pages to get exposure, to publish the link to their pages (as I do at the end of this very page (don’t blame me for using my own advice) or simply to get some attention.
So content can not only be a way to rank better, but also a way to expose your views, opinions and your links.

You Have to Have a GOOD domain name.

Having a good web page is good, but nothing beats having a GOOD DOMAIN NAME for your small business. You cannot sell frozen fish using “www.thebestcarloan.com” you have to have something like “frozenfish4u.com.” When people see the domain name of a company, they associate it with the product, it is impossible for them to think that your product is serious unless they see something related in the domain name. A domain name is a PLACE, a SPOT, your station, people think: “Hey, I don’t go to the supermarket to get medical services or to the doctors office to get groceries…”

Once you define the best name there is for your business, you have to register it.

Registering a domain name is very easy, just search for “domain name registration” and you’ll get tons of registrars.

Well that’s about all the information I can bring in this article today.

Be Inspired to Create Better Websites

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Being a writer, when I was asked to do some research into what makes a good website, of course I straightaway went to check out all of my favorite authors. After sifting through a few standard sites I remembered to look at one of my all time respected writers-Paulo Coelho. Judging by how many books he has sold he is obviously a lot of people’s favorite, and his website is exactly what you’d want to keep the fans happy.

If any of you are familiar with Coelho’s work you will know how prolific he has become all over the world. People love the simplicity of his stories about the spiritual quests of all people and the idea that the magical happens in everybody’s lives, even the so-called ‘ordinary, normal’ person. He to me comes across as a perfect example of the power of human connection, his books having affected millions across all national boundaries. As an Internet writer, to me he symbolizes the possibilities lying in the future of the Web. Like a good book, the Internet too can cross all imagined ideas of separation bringing people from all walks of life together in the context of positive thought and action.

Coelho’s website’s homepage starts off with a simple black screen, and a large photo of the man smiling-a very humanistic approach to this new medium. It then has many different sections as well as links to relevant sites, even his own web log (on-line journal) entitled, ” Warrior of the Light Online”. I think I could spend innumerable hours reading over his personal thoughts and pieces of information he has integrated from elsewhere. Having this added website of an on-line diary gives the site even more humanistic qualities, as any person can truly connect with Coelho’s innermost feelings and thoughts.

The sections on the main site are separated into categories like: Biography, Paulo Coelho Institute, Photo Gallery, Road to Santiago, Agenda, Books, Editions, Free downloads, Meditation, TV on-line (videos), Warrior of Light, To journalists, FAQ, Message for the author, and Recommend this site. We are talking about a very extensive and well thought out site. Any type of individual or business, especially writers, could learn a lot from this example.

Just to touch on a few aspects of the site’s categories I’ll focus on the one’s I had a good look at. The biography was excellent, an extremely in-depth look at Coelho’s life from childhood until present day. No holes barred, he’s not ashamed to tell of all his low points as well as the usual list of one’s achievements. It is very honest, he tells of how his parents institutionalized him several times thinking he was crazy, as well as stories of being tortured as a political prisoner and of his ‘dark’ experiences with drugs and black magic. This humanistic perspective gives the site a much more personal feel as well as eliciting reactions in readers, much more powerful than a bland website that solely focuses on a writer’s books and how to purchase them.

The photo gallery is another dimension I have not witnessed on many other sites. He again gives vision to his whole life with photos included from areas entitled, Childhood, Transition, The crazy years, 2000/2001, 2002, and Today. You see, this website isn’t just a shop front or a facade for a business. It gives the individual an opportunity to share his identity with the whole world, a courageous act only taken by people who aren’t afraid to put themselves on the line, sharing their spirits with all of humanity. This is the key to why the website is so powerful, one needs to take risks to achieve success in life.

I could write extensively on the other categories of the site but I think you could just go and check them out yourself. Me telling you what is a good website isn’t going to teach you much, you’ve got to experience things for yourself to truly gain the knowledge you are looking for. Maybe you’ll be so inspired, one day it’ll be your website I’m writing about!

Taking The Confusion Out Of Golf Ball Compression

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Compression, in terms of a golf ball, is probably the most understood aspect of golf ball technology. At one time compression was used to describe the quality of a golf ball according to the tightness of the windings around a three piece ball core. The tighter the windings the better the ball’s performance.

Because of the advancement in materials used to produce golf balls the compression ratings of golf balls now only indicate how much a ball will “deform” under a compressive force.

For example if you watch some professional golf tournaments, from time to time they will will show how certain players are driving the ball. In super slow motion they show the driver as it meets the ball. If you see this you will see the ball actually flatten out quit a bit on impact. Simply, the ball is deformed out of it’s round shape, compressed, and then returned to it’s round shape, all in a split second.

So what does this mean to you?

Most people will buy balls with a compression rating of between 80 and 110. The lower the compression rating, 80 for example, the more the ball will compress. A 110 compression rated ball will compress or deform less than an 80 compression rated ball.

Although most ratings are not standard from maufacturer to maufacturer, most people with a slower swing or slower club head speed would be better of with a lower compression rating, and a player with a higher club head speed would use a higher compression rated ball.

The compression of a ball will not make it fly farther. Some players think that a higher compression rated ball will fly farther. Club head speed rather than compression will determine the distance. In some cases some players should be playing a ball with a lower compression to increase distance.

Using a golf ball that has a compression rating for you will in fact help your golf game. For example most women have slower club head speeds than most men. In this case those players should be using a lower compression golf ball. If you have a slower swing speed and you are using a high compression golf ball, you are loosing yardage. Vise versa for those with high club head speeds, they should be using a high compression ball for maximum yardage.

Oh! God My Computer is Dead

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

One morning you got up as usual and just took your morning coffee as usual. You thought, it is time to check for new e-mails and latest news on your PC (Personal Computer). You went to your room and tried to switch it ON as usual, but hey what’s that nothing happens. It just shows some Blah! Blah! booting and after that it again restarts. The process keeps on repeating, till you switch the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) OFF!

You ask yourself what’s that, is it a nightmare or reality? In 90% cases it is a reality. Now you are thinking what could be the reason behind this trouble. Suddenly something struck to your mind, you remember an e-mail yesterday, with some strange material attached to it and Jesus! you downloaded it.

So, the problem may be some sort of computer virus or spyware which is already inside your computer. Now, only option you got is to call your local Computer Service Engineer and shed precious dollars; your hard earned money.

Do not worry it is just a imaginative story narrated by me, but it could become a reality in your life if you do not take necessary steps to safeguard your PC from these threats.

It is always better to be proactive than to be defensive later, against these malicious objects.

Always try to use some good anti-virus or good firewall to prevent your computer from the virus attacks.

Try to avoid sharing of floppies with each other, as it may pass on the viruses to other computers. Also try to avoid downloading of attachments from strangers.

Take Care,

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) & Web Accessibility

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

There’s been widespread speculation about the new legislation being introduced under the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act), which will ensure that websites are accessible to blind and disabled users. Try to find specific information about it on the Internet and chances are you’ll come up empty handed.

The RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) and the DRC (Disability Rights Commission), two of the most renowned advocates for the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) and accessible websites, have no specific information about the laws and what websites specifically need to do in order to meet the legal requirements.

So, what does the law state?

Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act refers to the provision of goods, facilities and services. The Code of Practice, which specifically mentions websites, can be downloaded in its entirety from the DRC website (http://www.drc-gb.org/open4all/law/Code%20of%20Practice.pdf 676kb).

The relevant quotes from this 175-page document are:

  • 2.2 (p7): “The Act makes it unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to members of the public.”

  • 4.7 (p39): “From 1st October 1999 a service provider has to take reasonable steps to change a practice which makes it unreasonably difficult for disabled people to make use of its services.”

  • 2.13 – 2.17 (p11-13): “What services are affected by the Act? An airline company provides a flight reservation and booking service to the public on its website. This is a provision of a service and is subject to the act.”

  • 5.23 (p71): “For people with visual impairments, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include … accessible websites.”

  • 5.26 (p68): “For people with hearing disabilities, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include … accessible websites. “

When does the law come into force?

It’s widely believed that the new laws will be implemented in October of this year, when the final part of the DDA comes into force. This final piece of legislation actually refers to service providers having to consider making permanent physical adjustments to their premises and is not related to the Internet in any way.

The law about accessible websites came into force on 1st October 1999 (http://www.drc-gb.org/open4all/law/code.asp) and the Code of Practice for this section of the Act was published on 27th May 2002 (http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2002/20020720.htm). This means that the majority of websites are already in breach of the law.

Can you be sued?

Well, probably. The RNIB claim that they’ve considered taking up a number of legal cases against organisations with regard to their websites. When they raised the accessibility issues of the website under the DDA, companies have typically made the necessary changes, rather than facing the prospect of legal action.

The DRC has now published their findings from their formal investigation into 1000 websites. (http://www.drc-gb.org/publicationsandreports/2.pdf). If your website was included then you will have to start thinking about making it accessible to all web users in the very near future.

What do you need to do to comply?

It’s widely believed that if, or perhaps more appropriately when, a case makes it to court that the W3C accessibility guidelines will be used to assess a website’s accessibility and ultimately decide the outcome of the case. The W3C is the Internet governing body and its web accessibility guidelines can be found at http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/full-checklist.html.

To further complicate matters, the W3C offers three different levels of compliance. Priority 1 guidelines, (which must be satisfied according to the W3C) will almost certainly have to be adhered to. Priority 2 guidelines (which should be satisfied and are the EU recommended level of compliance (http://www.disabilityworld.org/09-10_02/access/internetaccess.shtml), or some part of, will probably also need to be adhered to too.

The courts will also no doubt take guidance from the outcome of an Australian case in 2000, when a blind man successfully sued the Sydney Olympics organising committee over their inaccessible website (http://www.contenu.nu/socog.html).

How To Earn Cisco’s Firewall Specialist Certification

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Security is a hot topic in today’s networks, and will continue to be for a long time to come. With that in mind, you must consider adding a Cisco security certification to your resume and firewall skills to your skill set.

It’s quite a jump from the CCNA to the CCSP (Cisco Certified Security Professional), and Cisco has made that leap more manageable by adding Specialist certifications. These certifications can give quite a boost to both your resume and your skill set, and act as a great “stepping stone” to the CCSP.

At present, Cisco offers four VPN/Security certifications, those being Cisco Firewall Specialist, Cisco IPS Specialist, Cisco VPN Specialist, and Cisco VPN/Security Sales Specialist. Since every WAN engineer has contact with Cisco firewalls on a regular basis, we’ll take a closer look at this popular certification first. (And those who want to be WAN engineers had better learn something about firewalls, too!)

At the writing of this article (October 21, 2005), Cisco is offering an option for each of the two exams you’ll need to pass to earn this certification. For the first exam, you can take either the 642-551 SND (Securing Cisco Network Devices) or 642-501 SECUR (Securing Cisco IOS Networks). The final day to register for the SECUR exam is December 19, 2005.

For either, you’ll need to be able to answer questions regarding the proper use of Cisco security devices; how to configure security on a Cisco switch and on a router, including syslog logging, AAA, ACLs, and security for router services and interfaces.

The choices for the second exam are the 642-522 SNPA (Securing Network with PIX and ASA) and 642-521 CSPFA. Topics for these exams include , IPSec, NAT, firewalls, AAA, and policy mapping. (As always, you should check for the latest exam blueprints at Cisco’s website. Click “Learning And Events” on the main page, www.cisco.com).

The only prerequisite for this certification is that you must hold a valid CCNA certification.

As always, getting some hands-on experience is the best way to prepare for your Cisco exams. (Your employer is going to get a little upset if you practice your configs on his or her PIX. It would be a good idea to have a good lawyer, too.) There are online rack rental services that include Cisco security devices in their pods.

Cisco certifications are a great way to help protect your career as well as your network. The more you know, and the more varied your skills, the more valuable you are to your present and future employers. Use your CCNA as a foundation, and keep building on your skills!

The inspirational Power Of A Golf Training Video

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Many golf training videos in the market today will show you in great detail, how some of the PGA professionals do it and the so-called secrets behind their success.

From detailed specifics on why their playing techniques are so effective, to the preparation and exercise training they are usually involved in to keep themselves in tip-top condition and at a high level of golf-fitness. Many golf training videos will also cover the most important subject at any golf forum, which is how to improve on the golf swing.

Actually golf training videos are extremely powerful tools that can help anybody improve their golf game dramatically. What I love most about most golf training videos, is the inspirational aspect.

Usually moments after you have just finished watching a golf training video, the tendency is usually to feel extremely enthusiastic and inspired. And in most cases, you will tend to anxiously look forward to the next round of golf that you will be playing.

Golf training videos have helped many golfers overcome their fears and to take a closer look into golf-specific exercises for golfers, which have in turn greatly improved their game, just like they have done for the professionals.

Inspiration is very important to anybody wishing to improve anything in his or her life. This is because inspiration tends to help the individual to develop a deeper interest in the game, which without even the added techniques learnt, will always tend to help the person show great improvements in the particular area of interest. This is exactly what the golf training videos tend to do for most golfers.

For example many amateur golfers initially tend to avoid exercises, fearing that they will be too rigorous. However after viewing a golf training video where they usually get a glimpse of the sort of exercises being done by the professionals, they change their minds about golf-specific exercises. A lecture in most cases will not be anywhere near as effective as a golf training video.

A Mission Viejo California attorney won from a lawyer in Fargo North Dakota

Friday, December 26th, 2008

It then used those totals to decide who to lay off. Knolls totaled those scores and gave the employees additional points based on their years of service. The Supreme Court ruled that if an employer seeks to rely on that defense. In Meacham Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory was planning to lay off a number of employees. Twenty-eight of those 45 employees sued under the ADEA claiming Knolls illegally fired them because of their age. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit initially affirmed the jurys findings but after the United States Supreme Court asked it to reconsider the Second Circuit reversed itself and ruled in favor of Knolls. In other words the ADEA permits employers to discriminate based on age considering age is legitimately necessary under the circumstances. It has the burden to prove that its decision was based on a reasonable factor other than age. The BFOQ defense states that it is not unlawful for an employer to take adverse employment actions otherwise prohibited by the ADEA where age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. Specifically the jury found that although the plaintiffs did not prove that Knolls intentionally discriminated against them they did prove that Knolls method of deciding who to lay off disproportionately harmed older workers. In reaching its conclusion that the employer has the burden to prove the reasonable factors other than age defense the Supreme Court looked at another provision of the ADEA the bona fide occupational qualification defense. For example it would not be illegal to consider criteria for a particular role in a movie that has a disparate impact on age if the part calls for someone of a particular age. Thirty of the 11 salaried employees the company laid off were at least 55 years old. As long as the adverse action is based on reasonable factors other than age. A lawyer from Sliedrecht won from a lawyer in Boca Raton Florida In that case Meacham versus Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory the Supreme Court interpreted a provision of the ADEA that permits an employer to take an adverse employment action against an employee. The Supreme Court has previously recognized that the employer has the burden to establish the BFOQ affirmative defense. Even if the employment action is otherwise prohibited by the ADEA. The company had its supervisors rate their subordinates based on their performance flexibility and critical skills. The Supreme Court then agreed to hear the case and eventually reversed the Second Circuit and reinstated the jurys finding that Knolls policy unlawfully discriminated because of age. At the trial a jury found Knolls had violated the ADEA because its layoff procedure had a disparate impact based on age.
