Tips for Finding the Proper Printer For Your Home or Office

The written word has existed for at least 5,000 years. The creation of writing had enormous implications, because it allowed humans to communicate across both distance and time. The earliest known printed book, entitled the “Diamond Sutra,” was produced in China in the 9th century using a hand-carved wooden block system. By 1050, movable clay type was being used in China. In 1452, Johann Gutenberg invented metal, movable type in Germany and the race for sharper, less expensive and faster printing was on. The first office duplicator was probably the typewriter patented in 1867, and the first practical mechanized type casting machine, called the “Linotype,” was created in 1884.

The early 1960’s brought the next major printing improvement with the use of cathode ray tubes (CRT) being used for photocomposition. Today, most functions in advanced composition systems–justification of lines, hyphenation of words, and calculations of page depths–are handled by computer.

With the computer age came dot-matrix printers, first for the office and then becoming affordable for home use. Now, affordable, high-quality digital printers have become available, at reasonable prices, for use in the home or office. We have certainly come a long way with printing devices over the centuries. Today, a printer is one of the essential peripherals you will need for your computer. The difficulty in buying the right one is complicated by the fact that are so many types, models and features from which to choose.

The best approach when buying any major item is to educate yourself. Start slowly, you don’t need to become a Canon or an HP expert. You simply need to know some of the terminology so you do not feel overwhelmed by the meaningless technical jargon used by some salesmen who are more concerned about a commission than your personal needs as a customer.

Some important terms to know include: inkjet, laser, dpi, cpi (characters per inch), impact printers, optical density, nozzle, cartridge, cpp (cost per page), cps (characters per second), and toner.

Three different technologies dominate in the field of personal printers: inkjet, laser, and to a lesser extent, LED (light-emitting diode). Using replaceable cartridges that spray fine droplets of ink, personal inkjet are the least expensive, but print slowly. Laser printers use a process similar to that of a photocopier: a light-sensitive drum rolls charged black toner onto the paper. This produces crisp, fast printouts, but the machines are more expensive to purchase.

Before comparing prices of specific brand or models, first decide whether you want ink jet or laser. Your choice should be determined by the jobs you plan to send to the printer. Lasers still win the speed contest, while ink jets offer an important advantage of color printing. In the past, the choice was fairly consistent: lasers were used in the office, while inkjets were purchased for home use. Fortunately, with the rapidly changing technology, prices for both types of printers have been reduced enough to make it possible to purchase one of each, if you absolutely need both color and high-quality text.

Another decision to be made before shopping would be your resolution needs. Resolution–the sharpness or the clearness of the image–is measured in Dots Per Inch (dpi). A basic definition required for different uses is as follows: general-purpose txt: 300 dpi; higher quality text and graphics: 600 dpi; photo-quality images: 1,200 dpi; professional quality photos: 2,400 dpi. Be aware that resolution rating do not tell the whole story. Most vendors design their own techniques for enhancing resolutions through software algorithms. Consequently, some 600 dpi printers will produce images equal to a 1,200 dpi printer.

Other important considerations should be speed–pages per minute (ppm); ink/toner configuration; paper capacity and handling; the connection type (will it interface with your computer); driver software; media (can it handle glossary photo paper, card stock and envelopes); construction; the amount of space it takes at your work space; and certainly, price. Surprisingly, printers are now available under $70. Whatever your budget, with a little comparison shopping, you can find the printer that is right for your particular situation at an affordable price.

Short Stack Moves: Don’t Do the Weak Ace

So you’re short stacked and looking for the best spot your money to get in the poker pot. What kind of online poker cards do you want to move with? Obviously the big pairs and high suited connectors like AA KK QQ JJ AK and so on, especially when you are the one moving in rather than being moved against, are the hands you want to see, but since these hands occur so infrequently, you can’t sit around waiting for them in hopes of survival.

A lot of what dictates what cards are right to move and when includes definitive consideration of your position at the poker table and the action before you. As when you have a regular stack, you don’t want to put your money in too early when all it takes after you is for an opponent to wake up with a hand like AA and knock you out when you could have folded that K 10 from under the gun and waited a little longer.

Though many players will say move with any ace when you’re the short stack, to do so from too early a position could often cost you the tournament. You know that when you move with a weak ace, you will be called all the time if anyone after you picks up a strong ace or better, which will have you most of the time headed out the door. Moving with a hand like 9/10 suited, in position, is a much more powerful play, as when you do get called by the AQ from the small blind, you’ll be almost a coin flip to win the pot, instead of being fully dominated moving with the A 7.

The pain of IT Asset Management

Last week I attended an international IT asset management conference in Orlando, Florida. This is the first time in several years that I’ve been able to simply attend such an event; usually I have to give a workshop or provide some type of presentation, so I was really looking forward to being a nameless face in the crowd.

While at the conference, the thing that struck me most was that I have become almost desensitized to the fear and the overwhelmed feeling that most folks experience when taking on an IT asset management project. I had forgotten the pain. Listening to asset managers, software license analysts and IT managers discuss the obstacles they face was a cold-shower-in-winter wake-up call for me. I’m sorry, gentle readers; I have become a jaded consultant giving lip service to my clients when I say, “I know your pain.”

So, today, I turn over a new leaf. I now remember the excruciating misery I felt the first few times I was responsible for such a project! Yep, it hurts! I can remember clearly now how panic and dread filled my belly when I first heard of the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and how they are the software police, advertising on the radio and billboards trying to get disgruntled employees to blow the whistle on their employers who might be out of license compliance.

I had begun to believe that the BSA wasn’t really going after companies anymore but the statistics I heard at the conference prove otherwise. The BSA published information about 200 settlements, valued at a total of over $19.8 million, made during a three-year period ending December 2004. In the first quarter of 2005, they published data on more than 15 new settlements, valued at over $1.5 million total. Now the important fact to remember is this: these are only the published settlements. Savvy lawyers can negotiate to keep a settlement private for companies found to be out of compliance.

The other fact that I had almost forgotten is that settlements are only a small portion of the expense companies face when caught being out of compliance. Experts estimate that in addition to settlement fees, organizations can expect to spend three to six times that amount for other costs associated with an audit and settlement.

In addition to audits by watchdog organizations such as the BSA and the Software Information and Industry Association (SIIA), software publishers have apparently stepped up audits among their own clients. At the conference, a presenter asked for a show of hands of folks who had been audited by a publisher, and about 50% to 75% of those attending had been audited. Yikes! If you read your license agreements carefully, you will likely note a clause that permits the publishers to audit you too!

Another bit of news that I got out of the conference was an update on the BSA. Apparently, they have been conducting antipiracy marketing campaigns in the Dallas and Pittsburg, PA areas to attempt to encourage corporate whistleblowers in those markets. Judging by the press releases on the BSA site listing settlements in those cities, those efforts are paying off. These successes may be helped by the fact that for the first time in the U.S., the BSA is offering rewards of up to $50,000 for qualifying reports received using its hotline or online reporting form by December 15, 2005. The SIIA also offers up to a $50K reward to whistleblowers.

So besides the potential risk of failing an audit, IT asset management is about knowing what you have, buying only what you need and maximizing the value of the asset throughout its lifecycle. Why is it so difficult and painful? One presenter asked attendees what the number one obstacle is to a successful software asset management program. The top cited reasons were: lack of executive buy-in, inadequate staffing, inability to understand software licenses, and organizational silos. This wasn’t news to me! These issues are often cited by my clients as why their efforts to date haven’t been successful. So with those concerns in mind, I will try to address these primary issues.

Executives usually relate to the financial bottom line. Managing IT assets effectively improves the bottom line, reduces risk exposure and increases the return on technology investments. Gartner, Inc. reports that in the first year of a SAM program companies can typically save up to 30% in management costs per asset, and in the subsequent four years savings are about 10% to 15%. In addition, the executives of an organization are responsible for compliance — be it Sarbanes-Oxley, regulatory or software license.

Many of my clients have me provide a presentation to senior management and the board of directors to elevate awareness and to help obtain executive buy-in. Awareness elevation can be done internally, although many have said that having a third party deliver the message helps significantly. Executives should know (but may need to be reminded) that the actions of employees are the legal responsibility of company directors. Once executive buy-in has been achieved, your focus should move to middle management and then to end users. It is essential that everyone in the company respect the need for information technology asset management.

Experts agree that it is not uncommon to see multiple, individually funded, virtually identical projects going on within a company. I’ve seen this in several instances. While the projects may have seemingly dissimilar goals such as a compliance program, security initiative or preparation for a PC refresh, the majority of the efforts really do overlap.

In addition, although most companies think of asset management as an IT initiative, it really does involve virtually everyone in the company and should include departments other than IT. This directly refers back to the problem with corporate silos or, as I like to say, the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. A good communications effort will undoubtedly uncover this type of corporate disconnect.

Information technology is strategically important to the organization, regardless of the size of the company. Is there another area in the business that escapes a strong return on investment analysis? I doubt it! But to be able to measure the ROI, a strong asset management program must be in place.

Understanding software licenses is no small feat. Consider the fact that most organizations have several hundred unique commercial applications on their infrastructure. This could mean, at any given time, that there are hundreds of contracts in effect. To take just one publisher as an example, it has been reported that Oracle has made 397 pages of changes to its licensing rules and regulations over the past 12 months. Now multiply that by the number of publishers represented on your systems and you can clearly see that just keeping up with changes is a daunting task for anyone!

Remember that contracts can include not only software licenses but also maintenance agreements, upgrade programs, leases, services and more. The job of negotiating and managing contracts should not be left to the untrained. The person or persons managing contracts should have the ability to read contract terms and conditions, to understand those terms and conditions and to apply that understanding to IT requirements.

If your organization doesn’t have internal resources to address the nuances of license agreements, then consider outsourcing this role to experts. There are a number of companies available to handle the analysis, negotiation and management of software license contracts. Outsourcing this task could very likely pay for itself in savings gained through skillful negotiations and management by experts.

At the very least, contracts should be centrally managed and reviewed by experienced staff or legal counsel. In addition, every contract should be examined to determine what entitlements and restrictions exist. Those responsible for the installation, maintenance and retirement of software should be made aware of the contract elements so that the terms of the agreement are strictly followed. And contracts must be managed throughout the life of the agreement; often upgrades are free or less expensive if taken within specified timeframes.

As far as corporate silos, gee, they exist everywhere! The best advice that I can give you is to get top-level support for your SAM or IT asset management initiative. Include on your SAM team members from various areas within the business, including those outside your own silo! I’ve often found that winning over the biggest troublemakers (or project saboteurs) as early in the project as possible can be the best tactic for overcoming these obstacles.

Consider the fact that just about everyone in the organization can gain something from a good asset management program. Find out what is needed by other business groups, departments, etc. You may find not only staffing but budget dollars available to apply to your project. If, for example, security is looking for a tool for some specific purpose, it may be that there is a comprehensive tool that addresses both the needs of the security team as well as those for asset management. Perhaps the service or help desk is in need of information or controls; is there an asset management tool that can serve both needs? Often the finance and/or procurement groups are in need of a company-wide method of tracking expenses, contracts, physical assets, etc.

Another avenue is to ask yourself (or management) these questions: “What is the company doing to prepare for a disaster? How will the disaster recovery team know what assets exist without a proper asset management program? What would happen if disaster struck today? Where would this company be without our IT assets?” Believe it or not, many companies have yet to plan an adequate disaster recovery or business continuity program. You just may be able to sell your idea on the premise that it will significantly enable any disaster plan or recovery effort.

Remember that IT asset management (ITAM) should be viewed as the physical, contractual and financial management of technology assets. ITAM allows us to optimize assets to best meet the needs of the organization. Make sure that your goals for a SAM or ITAM program are clear and include performance, risk reduction, savings, control and accountability.

While I cannot take away the pain of an IT asset management program, hopefully you have gleaned some helpful hints from my advice. Further, may I recommend aspirin and antacid on a regular basis; you will get through it despite the pain!

Coaching and NLP are both humanistic in stance, spending effort on improving a customers well-being rather than jumping into the minefields of childhood, like traditional psychology. Life coachings emphasis is, however, deliberately proactive and problem solving.

Success coaching is not about preaching to the client what to do. This is a common misconception. Some success coaches are legitimately successful in their business careers and then make the change to personal coaching, thinking that they will at most be required to share their pearls of brilliant success and wisdom with the lifestyle coaching client. This is more like mentoring a person in a specific environment. Performance coaching is instead about life as a collective.

Mars Global Surveyor

While Spirit and Opportunity, Nasa’s Mars Rovers are getting all the attention, largely overlooked bonanzas of information about the Red Planet are being reaped by the Mars Global Survey.

Originally launched for the first time successfully on September 12 1997, the Mars Global Surveyor has given Nasa much more than its expectations by living beyond its primary mission which was intended to end in January of 2002. Remaining in good condition as of this point, Nasa has extended its mission for a third time through 2006 and believe if funding is allocated the Surveyor could remain in space around Mars’ orbit for another five to ten years. On September twelfth of this year, the Global Surveyor passed Viking I as the longest lived spacecraft in Mars space mission history.

Among the discoveries made by the Surveyor, the most dramatic since its mission began was a discovery of a fossilized river delta in a crater known as “Eberswalde”. This delta proved the existence of water flow among Mars at one time, resulting in the production of sedimentary rock as found by Spirit and Opportunity.

The most exciting recent discovery has been that of the formation of new gullies on Mars. This evidence has changed the estimates of the age of Mars. In addition, the Mars Global Surveyor discovered a shrinking of the southern polar ice cap of three feet a year. This proved to Nasa that Mars is undergoing more frequent changed than previously believed. In addition, the Surveyor has gathered data on the well-known dust storms of Mars, showing them to be seasonal, varying, and covering only part of the planet at a time. The dust storms were found to be higher in the atmosphere than previously suspected. This meant the surface of Mars is calmer than previously believed during these interludes.

New technology has allowed Nasa to increase its utilization of the Surveyor in ways never dreamed of at the onset of its mission. Resolution of its cameras made it possible to determine that boulders no larger than one to two meters exist in ripples caused by a catastrophic flood. This technique, is known as “compensated pitch and roll targeted observation”. In May of this year, the Surveyor again made history by being the first spacecraft to ever take images of other spacecraft in orbit, taking images of the European Space Agency’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Odyssey.

Human Evolution… A. to Z. How and when did human evolve!

Human evolution is not a chance happening… human evolution has occurred owing to a premeditated cause. It was only through human evolution that God could have completed the cosmic life cycle resulting in the continuing of the whole Cosmos.

No human evolution… the whole world nay the whole Cosmos itself would have collapsed. Why?

In the cosmic life cycle the human evolution plays a very vital part. As was decided by God Almighty… it was only after human evolution that the soul (atman) within a human being could have realized its full potential and finally liberated for ever. In other words it was only after human evolution that one could have gained salvation… the final stage in the cosmic life cycle!

The evolution of a human being signifies the end of the cosmic journey. It is only as a human being that one can realize God in ones lifetime (reach the stage of enlightenment and finally salvation). Having achieved salvation the life comes to a full circle. Our soul (the atman within) liberates for ever from the cycle of birth and death.

In the series of cosmic evolution… the first organism to manifest life is the form of an amoeba (single cell formation). As life evolves further this single cell formation evolves into the next higher stage of multi-cell formation. Subsequently this being evolves into insect life.

This insect life is far from the stage of human evolution. As time passes by this insect life further evolves into plant life. After a series of various manifestations as various species of plant… this plant life itself steps into the next sage of evolution and further evolves into animal life. This animal life is one step before the stage of human evolution.

Compared to the human evolution the insect life is bound by many limitations… it does not have the power to think and discriminate. Life is as it is. Life is got to be lived as it was meant to be for there was no choice in the life of an insect as in the case after human evolution. Every human being enjoys unlimited power of discrimination. One can live life as one wants to be. It is only after human evolution that one can live the life of choice.

Seeing from the point of view of every insect… we shall find that this species of insect life looks forward to reaching the stage of human evolution for they learn from experience that the form of a human being is much superior to them. In the series of human evolution the stage of insect life is exactly the same as when we see a small plant compared to a full-grown tree.

Every human being had at a certain stage in cosmic life lived through the span of insect life. One could not have managed without it. The process of evolution is self-contained. Whether we desire it or not we keep on going up the ladder of cosmic evolution until we reach the stage of human evolution.

The plant life itself is completely static in nature. It cannot move on its own. It has very serious limitations and has to face the fury of nature quite often. This limitation can only be overcome unless the plant life switches over to the next stage of evolution… the animal evolution stage. It is only as an animal that one can run about and take shelter whenever one faces danger or a natural calamity.

Evolving into an animal form announces that in the cosmic hierarchy one is only one step lower than the stage of human evolution. Even an animal looks forward to the form of a human being; the highest stage in the series of evolution for it knows that only as a human being can one live a life of choice. Even animals have restrictive thinking powers.

The final stage in the human evolution… the form of a human being is the stage of practicing full control over all the cosmic powers that be. It is only as a human being that one can remain a laborer, become a King or finally reach the status of man God like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed.

Human evolution can never be perceived upon as something which has been forced upon us unwittingly. Human evolution announces the beginning of a life of choice. Every human being has been given the power of discrimination and choice inherently. One may practice it or not… the power of thinking and discrimination are the highest powers available to one in the cosmic system created by God the Almighty.

Human evolution is the last cosmic stage in the life of a soul (the atman within). For it knows that only after every life form evolves into a human being can it liberate forever from the cycle of birth and death. Every soul (the atman within) looks forward to reaching the stage of human evolution.

While passing through the stage of insect life the soul (the atman within) knows very well that the ultimate goal shall be achieved only after reaching the stage of human evolution.

Having reached the stage of animal life… the soul (the atman within) again realizes that it is nearing the end of journey for the animal life has to evolve into the human stage… it has no other alternative. And it is only as a human being one can realize God and attain the stage of salvation.

Human evolution is not a journey for the insect, the plant life or the animal life. The journey right from the stage of amoeba and until the stage of human evolution is for our soul (the atman within). It is this soul (our atman within) which is on a cosmic journey and in order to purify itself it has to pass through a series of manifestations before it can liberate itself for ever.

The life of soul (the atman within) from the beginning to the end of the journey is similar to the stages a piece of metal passes through in its lifetime. Right from the stage of being sandwiched in the metal ore and until the last stage of purification when the metal gains absolute purity… it is a total of 8.4 million manifestations in the life of a soul (the atman within).

Right from the stage of amoeba to the stage of gaining enlightenment by a human being… the cosmic life cycle is governed by the process of evolution as put forward by Charles Darwin in his famous theory of Evolution. Every human being reaches the human form having crossed a total of 7.3 million lives either in the form of insect, plant or an animal.

Human evolution is the last stage in the process of evolution envisaged by God. Even as a human being one cannot just do away with life. We have unlimited choices and the power of absolute discrimination, yet every human being is governed by the laws of nature and God the Almighty himself.

No human being can ever tread upon the fixed laws of nature. The moment we do so… we face the fury of nature as has been experienced by the mankind in the tornadoes, the hurricanes and the tsunamis which cause irreparable damage and loss to the mankind as a whole.

To reach the stage of salvation as a human being is the prime purpose of every human… having reached the stage of human evolution. The journey is long yet one does not have any other choice. It is our soul (the atman within) which is on the cosmic journey and every human being has to bid by its choice.

Whenever the ego of a human being prompts one to differ with the choice of our soul (the atman within)… it is a series of stress and strains primarily in the workplace one has to go through. To avoid passing the stage of unhealthy stresses and strains every human being must abide by the wishes of our soul (the atman within).

The ultimate goal… the final destination for the soul (the atman within) is fixed… but every human being has been given the power to choose his own path. As many human beings… as many paths are there for one to realise God and reach the end of the cosmic journey. No human being can ever be a loser in the end. Realizing God in this very life and reaching the stage of salvation is something which can never be described in words.

The end of the cosmic journey signifies the completion of a long journey… a total of 96.4 million earthly years. The life Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and prophet Mohammed lived cannot be described in mere words. It was purely a journey by choice… even death did not matter to them all. They had all in the last leg of their earthly journey even defeated death on its face.

All these enlightened souls like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed had transcended life itself. They had become immortal in the true sense that they would not have to indulge again in manifesting life thereafter. Life had truly come full circle for these godly souls.

We must always remember that human evolution being the highest stage in the series of evolution was primarily meant for our soul (the atman within). It is only after reaching the stage of a human being that our soul (the atman within) can complete its cosmic journey. And as no human being has ever been given the power to undo the happenings in the life of our soul (the atman within)… we must always try to expedite the journey of our soul (the one within).

We must also remember that even as human beings there are a total of 1.1 million types of manifestations every human can evolve into. The life as a human being is not as simple. It does not take a life span of 70 to 80 years to decide but a total of 12.1 million earthly years which can be spent in the form of a human being before one can reach the stage of enlightenment and finally salvation.

Ape to Human Evolution is the last step in the journey of human evolution itself. It is only after reaching the stage of our ancestors… the Ape family did human being come into the scene.

Human evolution… the last in the city of cosmic evolution is the best form of manifestation that can be… we are not supposed to while away our life doing nothing. Why wait for the destiny to make it happen. Why not take the destiny into our control and cut short the cosmic journey!

The Glitters of Gold

As they say, not all that glitters is gold. But what is it in gold that makes it glitters? Is it because of its chemical components, its unique characteristics, or simply because it is just the way it is?

Scientifically, gold is a metal and at the same time a chemical element with the symbol Au, which stands for aurum, in the periodic table. Of all the different kinds of metals, gold is deemed as the most malleable and is ductile or one that can be flexed.

That is why it is the most popular metal being used for jewelries, trinkets, and charms.

In many instances, the gold’s color is yellow, but it can also have other colors such as ruby, black, or even purple depending on the “plasmon frequency” placed in the observable scope.

In this instance, plasmon frequency is the one responsible in reflecting the yellow and red light and the blue light to be sucked up.

For so many years now, gold has been a part of our human history. In fact, it was even used by the early human populace as an apparatus in their primitive way of living. It has captivated man’s desire for existence and superiority with its unique traits and functions.

In 4000 BC, the Europeans were said to be the first people who used gold in their daily living. They crafted it into different kinds of jewelry and extremely classy pieces of artistic objects.

In Egypt, gold was reportedly used as an element in King Tutankamen’s mask. Several historical reports asserted that the golden mask of the king had preserved its radiance and luster even after so many years of civilization that had passed.

Even in the past events, gold has long been a symbol of royalty and superiority. According to the Old Testament, gold was a symbol of King Solomon’s riches. It was also a symbol of thanksgiving and appreciation just like what the Queen of Sheba had done when she gave King Solomon large amount of gold as a sign of gratitude.

However, it was only during the fifth century when the Chinese, Greek, and Arabic civilization had introduced its new concept, which eventually resulted to the introduction of the science of chemistry. Here, gold is now considered as a chemical element, one that has more stable and practical function and not just any symbolic matter.

It was after the introduction of chemistry that it gained more popularity. From then on, gold has been considered by the people as one of the most prized metals. They have used it in making different icons, statues, and jewelries.

In today’s contemporary society, the most malleable metal of all has surpassed its usual traditional functions. Nowadays, it is being used in the new technology where man is no longer simply fascinated by its luster and shine but also by its capability of producing quality products like computers, home appliances, and mobile phones.

This wonderful metal is also used in embroidery, dentistry, ceramics, and even photography. In fact, cancer patients have found more of its feasible uses. There are many instances wherein it is being used when treating cancer patients and other diseases.

These are just a few of the many uses of gold. It serves as a viable element not just for jewelries and art objects but to all aspects that give humanity the reason to live life to its fullest.

So, now we know that this remarkable metal is not just considered pure and rare because of its characteristics but to the many functions and uses, as well, that it has served mankind throughout the years.
